Bhubaneswar: The slum named Phalikia Basti in Ashok Nagar of Ward No.41 under Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation(BMC) today became the 9th Open Defecation Free(ODF) slum within Bhubaneswar Town Centre District(BTCD) as part of the Swachh Bharat programme.
Sixty-two families residing in the Phalikia Basti recently constructed 48 toilets to make the slum ODF as some families agreed mutually to share the toilets owing to space constraints.
The residents of Phalikia Basti took out a ‘Gaurav Padyatra’ to celebrate their success to join the ODF category of slums. Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena and Bhubaneswar (Central) MLA Bijay Kumar Mohanty joined the slum dwellers in the padyatra.
It is worth mentioning that the Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) in association with BMC has undertaken a programme to end open defecation and has engaged Feedback Foundation to make all the 24 slums in the entire BTCD area ODF.
