Teenager’s Newborn Birth Incident Leads to Bandh in Kandhamal Today


The shameful episode of a teenage girl giving birth to a new born in the hostel toilet has led the Kandhamal Surkasha Abhiyan call for a 12-hour bandh in Kandhamal on Thursday.

The dawn to dusk bandh from 6 AM has support extend from Bharatiya Janata Party also. Educational institutions have remain closed, markets have been shut down and movement of vehicles and normal life has come to a standstill.

The protesters were seen demonstrating outside government and private organisations.

The protesters have demanded Rs. 50 lakhs compensation for the girl’s family. The strikers have objected to slow progress in this matter and voiced for a judicial probe. They have also demanded resignation of ministers Ramesh Majhi and Prafulla Samal. The angry protesters have called for transfer of the district magistrate and to suspend the district welfare officer.

Police force has been deployed to avoid any unforeseen circumstances.

The minor girl studied in Class 8 in a tribal residential school in Daringbadi district. As per reports, she got pregnant by accused Sraban Pradhan (23 years) during vacations at home. The accused has been arrested.

The girl and her newborn were saved by the locals 10 kms away from the school hostel in Sraniketa forest. Aftermath, they were shifted to sub divisional hospital in Baliguda.
