Berhampur: Dreaded criminal Danda Maharana Injured in police firing on his leg in an encounter at Tamana ghati under K. Nuagaon police station in the district today.
As indicated by sources, a team of Berhampur police caught Moharana while he and one of his partner were going through Tamana ghati.
At first Moharana fired three rounds after which the police retaliated in which he sustained injuries on his leg. During the gun battle, two police official also sustained injuries, sources in the police said.
Maharana was initially admitted to the Berhampur hospital but was later shifted to Cuttack.
As many as 19 cases are pending against the Maharana at Berhampur Town police station while two and 22 cases are pending against him at Gosani Nuagaon police station and K Nuagaon police station respectively.
He is also an associate of arrested former Congress MLA Ramesh Jena, police said.
