The Boxing Day Test of Day 3 started with Indian bowlers assault on the Australian batting line up. Ishant Sharma launched the first blow scalping Aaron Finch. And Jasprit Bumrah sent their other opener Marcus Harris back.
Ravindra Jadeja who replaced Umesh Yadav chipped in with two wickets. But the day belonged to Jasprit Bumrah who bowled his career best 6 for 33. The ball of the day belonged to Bumrah when he foxed Shaun Marsh with a slow yorker trapping him on his pads. At tea break, Australia were 145 for 7 and it took Bumrah 4 overs after the break to clean up the tail-enders.
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke termed Bumrah as ‘Genius’ on the microphone. Bumrah conjured second best figures after Kapil Dev outside the subcontinent. He became the first bowler to scalp five-for or more outside the subcontinent (South Africa, England and Australia) in a calendar year.
Australia were demolished scoring 151 all-out, well below the follow-on score line. India had a lead of 292 runs followed by their first innings score of 443 for 7 (declared).
The Indian captain though didn’t make the Australian team bat for the second time. And it rather proved fatal for them.
Pat Cummins destroyed the Indian top order in a span of 19 deliveries. He got the prized wicket of first innings centurion Cheteshwar Pujara for a duck. Virat Kohli (0) and Ajinkya Rahane (1) got out ball after ball. While, Rohit Sharma survived the hatrick ball of Cummins but was later removed by Josh Hazzlewood at the fag end of day’s play.
The debut opener Mayank Agarwal was the lone warrior with Rishabh Pant at the other end. India are reeling at 54 for 5 on day 3 but have accumulated a lead of 346 runs.
